Slovene Press Agency

The National Electoral Commission officially confirmed that Janez Drnovsek was elected president of the country with 56.52 percent of the vote on 1 December. The official results of the presidential runoff, as well as those of the elections into the National Council were released at a commission's session on 10 December 2002.

According to the official results, Drnovsek won the runoff with 586,847 votes, as opposed to his rival Barbara Brezigar who obtained 451,372 votes (43.48 percent). The turnout at the runoff stood at 65.39 percent, as 1,052,795 of the 1,610,494 eligible voters were recorded to have cast their ballots.

The number of ballots that were cast on 1 December was 1,052,494, while the number of void ballots turned out to be 14,275. In addition, 55 voters cast their ballots with a special certificate, as they had not been included in the electoral register. The official results of the runoff could only be given after the Commission had counted all the ballots that had come from abroad by mail and those that were cast at the 34 Slovenian diplomatic and consular missions around the world.

The commission also adopted the report on the elections of 40 members of the National Council, the upper chamber of the Slovenian parliament. Electors around Slovenia elected twenty-two national councillors as representatives of local interest on 27 November. One day later, another 18 councillors were elected as representatives of functional interests.
