Karl Erjavec
Karl Erjavec was born on 21 June 1960 in Aiseau in Belgium. He completed his first five years of primary education in Belgium. After graduating from the secondary school in Kranj he enrolled at the Ljubljana University Faculty of Law, taking his degree in 1985.
Until 1990 he worked in the private sector. In 1990 he was elected a member of the Executive Council of the Kranj Municipal Assembly and simultaneously appointed secretary for general administration and miscellaneous legal matters. In 1995 he was appointed head of cabinet at the office of the Human Rights Ombudsman and in 1997 was made director of the specialist service. During this period he dealt in detail with issues relating to the protection of fundamental human rights.
On 21 December 2000 he was appointed state secretary in the Ministry of Justice.
Mr Erjavec has published numerous articles on the protection of fundamental human rights and on the operation of the justice system. He is frequently invited to address professional seminars and conferences at home and abroad.
