Ambassador Veronika Stabej appointed President of the Board of Governors of the Anna Lindh Foundation

Brussels – The Board of Governors of the Anna Lindh Foundation (ALF), at a meeting in Brussels today, appointed Ambassador Veronika Stabej its new President for the next three years. The Anna Lindh Euro-Mediterranean Foundation for Dialogue between Cultures was established in Alexandria on 20 April 2005. The Foundation functions as a catalyst for all initiatives aimed at enhancing dialogue and general understanding between cultures, and promotes bringing Mediterranean countries and nations closer in the field of culture.

The Foundation is financed from the EU budget and by contributions of the Euro-Mediterranean Partnership members. It includes 43 countries of Euromed – the Union for the Mediterranean, and also has a national network in Slovenia. The Partnership provides a broader framework for its functioning, within which the participating countries actively promote dialogue, mutual understanding and respect. The year 2008 has been declared Euro-Mediterranean Year of Dialogue between Cultures and the European Year of Intercultural Dialogue. Intercultural dialogue was therefore among the priorities of Slovenia’s EU Council Presidency in the first half of 2008.

Ms Stabej (b. 1962) graduated in English and French from the Faculty of Arts in Ljubljana, and then continued her education in France, the United States, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom. She is fluent in French, English, Italian and Serbian/Croatian. In the 1990s, she was the official spokesperson at the Office of the Prime Minister and Head of the Public Relations Office. She joined the diplomatic service in 1997 and served as Minister Plenipotentiary at the Slovenian Embassy in Paris. In 2002, she became Ambassador to Canada.

Since returning to Slovenia, she has been the National Coordinator for the Francophonie since 2007; she also headed the Slovenian delegation to Euromed – Barcelona Process: The Union for the Mediterranean. During the Slovenian EU Council Presidency in the first half of 2008, Ms Stabej also headed the Euro-Mediterranean Partnership. On 26 May, she was made a Knight of the National Order of the Legion of Honour by the French President, Nicolas Sarkozy, for her active endeavours during the Presidency for the benefit of the Francophonie and in the field of the Partnership and the Union for the Mediterranean. Since December 2008, Veronika Stabej has been heading the Government Communication Office.

The function of President of the Board of Governors of the Anna Lindh Foundation is an honorary and non-professional one, and has been awarded to Slovenia in recognition of its activities in the wider Euro-Mediterranean region.
